The town's isothermal and hyperthermal mineral springs — sulphurous, chlorinated, calcium-sodic and weakly radioactive — range from roughly 38°C to 60°C and have been developed since Roman Emperor Trajan established baths here around 102 AD under the name 'Ad Aquas Herculis Sacras Ad Mediam' (the Sacred Waters of Hercules near Mehadia), with temples and statues dedicated to Hercules, Asclepius and Hygieia. Run by the Romanian hospitality group Bacolux, the resort draws on this same historic thermal-mineral water source for its spa and treatment facilities.
