Dunton Hot Springs occupies one of the most remote and historically resonant settings of any resort in the American Southwest. The site was originally a silver mining camp in the 1880s, sitting at over 2,700 metres in the San Juan Mountains of southwestern Colorado — a genuinely difficult piece of wilderness, accessible by a single unpaved mountain road through Dolores County. The camp was abandoned after the mining era ended, and the original log structures slowly decayed through the 20th century. Beginning in the 1990s, the property was carefully restored log cabin by log cabin into a private luxury resort for a maximum of around 30 guests, preserving the original buildings while adding discreet modern infrastructure. The natural hot spring that the miners used still flows through the centre of the property, feeding an open-air bathhouse where water emerges at around 44°C. The surrounding wilderness — the West Dolores River canyon, old-growth aspen forests, and the peaks of the San Juan range — is accessible by horse, snowshoe, or ski depending on the season. Butch Cassidy is said to have used Dunton as a hideout during his outlaw years.

Patrimonio
Heritage
Dolores County lies within the ancestral territory of the Nuche (Ute) people, who inhabited the Colorado Plateau and the mountains of the Four Corners region for centuries. The Ute Mountain Ute Tribe and the Southern Ute Indian Tribe, both federally recognized, maintain historical and cultural ties to this landscape. The silver mining era of the 1880s brought violent displacement of Ute communities from these mountains, a history that shapes the broader context of the region.
Cultura
Culture
The San Juan Mountains are among the most geologically dramatic ranges in Colorado — formed from the remnants of a massive ancient caldera system, their peaks and deep canyons have attracted prospectors, outlaws, and outdoor adventurers for 150 years. Dunton sits at the intersection of American frontier mythology and contemporary luxury wilderness travel, preserving the physical structures of 19th-century resource extraction while offering 21st-century guests an experience of genuine mountain remoteness.
Sostenibilidad
Sustainability
Dunton operates at very small scale — maximum approximately 30 guests — in a setting where the primary constraint on development is the remote location and the fragile high-altitude ecosystem of the West Dolores watershed. The resort's small footprint relative to the surrounding wilderness is central to both its ecological and commercial proposition. The San Juan National Forest immediately surrounds the property.
