The Russian and Turkish Baths at 268 East 10th Street in Manhattan's East Village have been in continuous operation since 1892, making them the oldest surviving public bath complex of their kind in New York City. The baths were established in the heart of what was then a dense Eastern European Jewish immigrant neighbourhood — the Lower East Side extended north into the East Village, and Russian and Turkish baths were a central social institution for newly arrived communities. The facility includes a Russian steam room (parilka) operating at around 77°C, a Turkish steam room, a Swedish dry sauna, an ice-cold plunge pool, a roof deck, and a café serving borscht, blintzes, and kvass — a culinary menu unchanged in character from the immigrant era. The baths have survived Prohibition, the Depression, World War II, urban decline, and gentrification through sheer institutional stubbornness and customer loyalty. Regular visitors — known affectionately as the 'regulars' — have included several generations of the same families alongside celebrities, politicians, and writers. The baths operate on an unusual alternating coed and sex-separated schedule.

The East Village was one of the densest immigrant settlement zones in 19th-century American history — primarily Eastern European Jews, Poles, Ukrainians, and Russians who recreated their home bathing cultures in the new city. The public bath was central to immigrant community life: a place of hygiene (when most tenement apartments lacked bathtubs), socialization, and cultural continuity. The Russian and Turkish Baths at E 10th Street are one of the last physical remnants of this immigrant urban landscape in Manhattan.
