Vichy es la capital histórica del termalismo francés y uno de los grandes centros del turismo de salud europeo. Sus ocho manantiales —entre ellos la Célestins y la Grande Grille— son bicarbonatados y sulforados, y han sido prescritos médicamente para afecciones digestivas y hepáticas desde el siglo XVII. Madame de Sévigné, Napoleón III y numerosas celebridades europeas tomaron curas en sus elegantes establecimientos termales. Inscrita en la lista de Grandes Balnearios de Europa de la UNESCO en 2021, la ciudad conserva su arquitectura termal del siglo XIX casi intacta.
Vichy rose to fame as the preferred spa of Napoleon III, who spent three summers here and modernised the town into one of Europe's grandest thermal resorts. Its fifteen springs all rise from the same deep aquifer in the volcanic Auvergne, carrying a high concentration of sodium bicarbonate and natural carbonation. The waters are internationally renowned for treating liver, digestive, and metabolic disorders. Part of the Great Spas of Europe UNESCO inscription.

The surrounding Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region contains one of France's highest concentrations of protected natural mineral water sources, with extraction limits enforced to preserve aquifer recharge.
