Chreli Abano ('Colorful Bath') is one of the most recognizable bathhouses in Abanotubani, the historic sulfur-bath district in the heart of Old Tbilisi. Legend holds that King Vakhtang Gorgasali founded Tbilisi in the 5th century after discovering the naturally hot sulfurous springs on this very spot — the city's name derives from 'tbili,' the Georgian word for warm. The current bathhouse structure dates to the 18th century and continues a centuries-old bathing tradition. Its sulfur-rich waters are used therapeutically for chronic arthritis, rheumatic and traumatic polyarthritis, drawing on a consistent natural chemical composition. Today Chreli Abano operates as one of Tbilisi's most iconic and upscale bathhouses, blending traditional Georgian bathing culture with modern spa amenities under its distinctive brick-domed roof.
