Los Termales are volcanic hot springs in the western highlands of Guatemala near Quetzaltenango (known locally as Xela), set at over 2,300 metres in the volcanic highlands near Volcán Santa María and the Santiaguito lava dome complex. The springs produce water at around 43°C from geothermal sources associated with the intense volcanic activity of the region. The high-altitude setting — surrounded by highland pine forests, indigenous Mam and K'iche' communities, and active volcanic landscapes — gives these springs a distinctive character unlike the lowland thermal spas of coastal Central America.
