Understanding the Ranges

What the Temperature Numbers Mean

Every spring in the AquaFonte directory lists water temperature at the source. Understanding what those numbers feel like — and how different bathing traditions have approached them — makes the data meaningful for planning.

Geologically, spring temperature is determined by depth and the local geothermal gradient (on average, about 25–30°C per kilometer of depth). A spring at 37°C has likely traveled from several hundred meters underground. One at 60°C comes from deeper, or from a more geothermally active zone.

How Traditional Bathing Cultures Approached Immersion Time

Every major thermal bathing culture has developed its own understanding of immersion duration, usually through centuries of accumulated practice rather than formal prescription.

In Japan, the concept of otoyu (appropriate hot water, or appropriate temperature) reflects an understanding that the right level of heat is personal and contextual. Traditional onsen practice involves multiple short immersions with rest periods between them — 10 to 20 minutes in the water, then a rest outside until the body cools, then re-entry. The famous outdoor pools at Takaragawa Onsen on the Tone River are designed around this rhythm, with rest areas between pools.

In the Central European kur tradition, bathing schedules were prescribed by physicians as part of multi-week stays: a specific pool, at a specific temperature, for a specific duration, at a specific time of day. The Karlovy Vary (Carlsbad) protocol, still practiced today by some visitors, involves morning walks between drinking fountains alternated with bathing periods — the rhythm of the day structured around the water.

At natural wild springs, the traditional approach is simpler: enter, monitor your own comfort, exit when you feel ready, rest, repeat if desired. The absence of infrastructure is itself a form of guidance — without jets and entertainment, the experience centers the body's own signals.

Outdoor Springs: Environmental Factors

Natural outdoor springs introduce variables that controlled spa environments don't have. Being aware of them makes for a better experience.

  • Altitude. High-altitude springs feel hotter relative to ambient air temperature, especially in cold seasons. The contrast between very cold air and hot water can be dramatic — at Termas Geométricas in Chile at 1,700 m or Chena Hot Springs in Alaska, this contrast is part of what makes the experience remarkable. Move between pools and indoor spaces if the cold air becomes uncomfortable.
  • Solar exposure. Open-air springs in full sun can cause sunburn quickly. The relaxing quality of hot water is distracting and many visitors underestimate how long they've been in the sun. Wear SPF on exposed skin before entering, and plan shade time between soaks.
  • Hydration. Hot water promotes perspiration even when submerged. The traditional Japanese placement of tea services adjacent to bathing areas, and the ubiquitous vending machines near Hungarian bath changing rooms, both reflect this longstanding understanding. Drink water before, during (where provided), and after any thermal soak.
  • Post-bath cooling. Moving rapidly from a very hot spring into cold air or cold water creates rapid cardiovascular changes. Traditional bathing cultures universally include a gradual transition: rest in a warm indoor space first, then move outdoors.

Visiting with Awareness

The knowledge accumulated over centuries of thermal bathing — in Japan, in the Austro-Hungarian spa towns, in the Roman thermae and their successors — consistently points toward the same practical wisdom: go slowly, observe your body's signals, take breaks, stay hydrated, and give yourself time to transition.
