Not all hot springs are equal. A hydrogeologist explains what dissolved minerals — sulfur, magnesium, silica, bicarbonate — mean for the water you soak in, how they get there, and why temperature changes everything about the chemistry of a spring.
Water in contact with volcanic rock for decades accumulates a mineral signature unique to its geology. Choose smaller operators over mass-market resorts when possible; many of the most remarkable spring experiences in Colombia, Chile, and Costa Rica are managed by local communities whose stewardship is the reason the sites remain pristine. The springs that will still be extraordinary in fifty years are the ones travelers choose to protect today.
