Aquae Vivae sits in Krapinske Toplice, a spa town in the rolling Zagorje hills of northern Croatia whose thermal springs have been used since antiquity, when Romans are said to have recognized the water's special qualities. Four sources feed the complex at a combined flow of about 80 litres per second, drawing hyperthermal water from Litavian limestone more than 1,200 metres down — water estimated to be over 40,000 years old. It emerges at around 41°C with a near-neutral pH of roughly 7.3–7.8 and about 450 mg/l of dissolved minerals, chiefly calcium and magnesium bicarbonates, requiring no artificial heating for the pools, which run between 28°C and 38°C. The modern water park, one of Croatia's largest indoor thermal complexes, was formally established in 1947 on a site with a documented spa tradition dating back centuries earlier, when Krapinske Toplice's parish is first recorded in 1334.
