Friedrichsbad, opened December 15, 1877 after construction from 1869, is a Neo-Renaissance bathing palace in Baden-Baden commissioned by Grand Duke Friedrich I and built on the site of ancient Roman baths on the slopes of the Florentinerberg. It is fed by twelve sodium-chloride-bearing artesian springs ranging 56–68.8°C, discharging roughly 800,000 liters daily; the springs themselves are estimated at 12,000–17,000 years old. The building's dome-topped circular bathing pool, 17.5 meters high, echoes the Roman baths of Caracalla and Diocletian. Baden-Baden was inscribed by UNESCO in July 2021 as one of eleven towns making up the 'Great Spa Towns of Europe' World Heritage Site.

Heritage

Grand Duke Friedrich I of Baden commissioned Friedrichsbad in 1868, and it was built 1869–1877 on the site of an old town quarter demolished to reveal underlying Roman thermal remains, opening December 15, 1877. Its design, by architect Karl Dernfeld, drew on the Rácz Baths in Budapest and the Graf-Eberhardsbad in Wildbad as well as Roman precedents; a Goethe quotation from Faust is inscribed on the facade in gold lettering. Baden-Baden was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage 'Great Spa Town of Europe' in July 2021.

Culture

Friedrichsbad combines Roman bathing culture with Irish hot-air bathing traditions across a structured multi-stage bathing circuit; the bath is typically clothing-optional (textilfrei), except on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
