Las Aguas Termales in the San Marcos Department of Guatemala occupy the remote high volcanic plateau near the dormant Tajumulco — the highest peak in Central America — and the active Tacaná volcano on the Guatemala-Mexico border. The springs produce water at around 45°C from geothermal activity associated with the volcanic arc. The setting at over 2,400 metres provides highland pine forest scenery and cool air temperatures that make the warm spring water particularly inviting. The region is home to Mam Maya communities with deep traditions of land and water stewardship.
