Swedana — Ayurvedic Steam Therapy

Swedana es uno de los procedimientos clásicos del Ayurveda, el antiguo sistema de bienestar indio, en el que el vapor medicado producido hirviendo combinaciones específicas de hierbas se dirige al cuerpo del receptor. La palabra proviene de la raíz sánscrita 'svid', que significa sudar, y la práctica forma parte de la fase preparatoria del Panchakarma.

Swedana is one of the classical procedures of Ayurveda — the ancient Indian system of wellness — in which medicated steam produced by boiling specific combinations of herbs is directed at the body of a recipient. The word comes from the Sanskrit root 'svid', meaning to sweat, and the practice forms part of the preparatory phase of Panchakarma (the Ayurvedic five-cleansing protocol). The herbs used vary according to the individual constitution (dosha) of the recipient, and may include neem, eucalyptus, lemongrass, turmeric, and dozens of other medicinal plants from the Kerala pharmacopoeia. Kerala is considered the homeland of classical Ayurvedic practice and has the highest concentration of traditional Ayurvedic centres in the world.
