Aquae Calidae (Burgas Mineral Baths)

Pocos yacimientos termales de Europa cuentan con un registro de uso tan continuo como Aquae Calidae, a las afueras de Burgas, cerca del mar Negro. Los pobladores tracios erigieron aquí un santuario a las Tres Ninfas en el primer milenio a.C., atraídos por el manantial naturalmente caliente que brota del suelo. Roma se anexionó el lugar tras la Tercera Guerra Mitridática y lo amplió hasta convertirlo en una auténtica estación de baños bajo el emperador Trajano, conectándolo con la red viaria de la Via Pontica. El emperador bizantino Justiniano I lo fortificó con murallas en el siglo VI, y durante la Edad Media fue conocido como Therma o Thermopolis, disputado entre Bulgaria y Bizancio hasta que los cruzados incendiaron el asentamiento en 1206. El sultán otomano Solimán I restauró los baños en 1562, renombrando la zona Lădzha. Una reserva arqueológica de 36.000 metros cuadrados declarada en 2011 protege hoy las capas excavadas, y un complejo museístico restaurado, inaugurado en 2015, permite a los visitantes recorrer el baño reconstruido de Solimán, fuentes de agua mineral y una plataforma de vidrio sobre las excavaciones en curso.

Few thermal sites in Europe carry as unbroken a record of use as Aquae Calidae, on the edge of Burgas near the Black Sea. Thracian settlers built a sanctuary to the Three Nymphs here in the 1st millennium BC, drawn by the naturally hot spring emerging from the ground. Rome absorbed the site after the Third Mithridatic War and expanded it into a proper bath station under Emperor Trajan, linking it to the Via Pontica road network. Byzantine emperor Justinian I fortified it with walls in the 6th century, and it was known through the Middle Ages as Therma or Thermopolis, contested between Bulgaria and Byzantium until Crusaders burned the settlement in 1206. Ottoman Sultan Suleiman I restored the baths in 1562, renaming the area Lădzha. A 36,000-square-metre archaeological reserve declared in 2011 now protects the excavated layers, and a restored museum complex opened in 2015 lets visitors walk past Suleiman's rebuilt bath, mineral-water fountains and a glass viewing floor over the ongoing dig.
