El Geiser

Ixtlán de los Hervores toma su nombre del náhuatl, que significa aproximadamente 'lugar donde hierve el agua', y El Géiser es la formación geotérmica que le dio origen. Este manantial termal intermitente puede alcanzar alturas de unos 30 metros, un fenómeno documentado ya en el siglo XVIII por el sacerdote jesuita exiliado Rafael Landívar, quien describió un manantial que 'brota de una abertura áspera con violencia inusual' y que retrocede cuando los observadores se acercan, para volver a brotar en cuanto se alejan. Desde entonces se ha desarrollado un modesto espacio recreativo alrededor del géiser y de los manantiales termales que lo rodean, atrayendo visitantes de toda la región de la Ciénega de Chapala, en Michoacán, para presenciar las erupciones.

Ixtlán de los Hervores takes its name from the Nahuatl for roughly 'place where the water boils,' and El Géiser is the geothermal feature that earned it. The intermittent hot spring can erupt to heights of around 30 meters, a phenomenon documented as far back as the 18th century by the exiled Jesuit priest Rafael Landívar, who described a spring that 'erupts from a rough opening with unusual violence' before receding as observers approach, only to erupt again once they retreat. A modest recreational area has since been developed around the geyser and its surrounding hot springs, drawing visitors from across Michoacán's Ciénega de Chapala region to watch the eruptions.
