Termas do Gerês lies in the village of Termas do Gerês, Vilar da Veiga parish, Terras de Bouro municipality, inside the Peneda-Gerês National Park. The first bathing structures — granite tanks sheltered in stone shelters known as 'Os Poços' — were built under King João V in the early 18th century, and the first formal Thermal Establishment began construction in 1897. Portuguese royalty, including King Luís I and the future King Carlos I, visited in 1888. The waters are traditionally indicated for liver, gallbladder, obesity, diabetes, hypertension and chronic rheumatism, though published temperature, pH and mineral-content figures could not be verified.
