7132 Hotel — Therme Vals

The village of Vals in Switzerland's Graubünden canton is home to one of the most discussed buildings in contemporary architecture: the Therme Vals, designed by Peter Zumthor and completed in 1996. Zumthor's bathhouse is built almost entirely from Valser quartzite — the local grey-green stone quarried from the mountain above the village — and is partially embedded in the hillside, creating an experience of bathing within the geological body of the Alps. The interior sequence moves through chambers of different temperature and character — the flower bath, the sound bath, the cold cave, the outdoor pool open to the Alpine sky — each lit through narrow slits and defined by the heavy, precise geometry of the quartzite construction. The building is considered one of the masterworks of phenomenological architecture: it is designed not to be appreciated visually but to be felt through the body moving through heat, cold, stone, water, light, and silence. The 7132 Hotel — the surrounding luxury hotel named after the village's postal code — provides accommodation on site and exclusive late-night access to the therme after public hours. Zumthor was awarded the Pritzker Prize in 2009, and the Therme Vals is widely cited as his definitive work.
