Bessho Onsen, in the Shiodadaira basin near Ueda, is considered the oldest hot spring in Nagano Prefecture, known since at least the founding of nearby Zenkoji Temple around 625. During the Kamakura period (1185-1333) it served as the seat of the regional governor, a branch of the Hojo clan, who built numerous temples there, earning the town the nickname 'Kamakura of Shinshu.' Its sulfurous waters are traditionally said to have soothed the wounds of warriors.
