Daruvarske Toplice rises within Julijev Park in the town of Daruvar, western Slavonia, about 130 km from Zagreb, on ground that Celtic-Pannonian tribes are recorded as using for therapeutic bathing as early as the 4th century BC. Rome later built the settlement of Aquae Balissae — 'very strong springs' — here, granting it autonomy as Res Publica Iasorum around 35 AD and elevating it to municipium status under Emperor Hadrian in 124 AD. The warm mineral water, which springs from Triassic limestone and dolomite beneath the Toplice stream valley, reaches about 46.7°C at the source, with pools typically run around 32°C, and the site retains medicinal mineral mud deposits alongside the water. Modern development began in earnest in 1772 under Antun Janković, and today the complex operates as a special hospital for medical rehabilitation, treating rheumatism, post-operative recovery and gynaecological conditions, set within a therapeutic park of 65 tree species.
