Dr. Wilkinson's Backyard Resort opened in 1952 and quickly became the defining voice of the Calistoga spa tradition. 'The works' — a sequence of volcanic ash mud bath, mineral whirlpool, blanket wrap, and massage — became the blueprint for the Calistoga experience. The resort draws geothermal mineral water at around 42°C and volcanic ash from the local geology for treatments that have been refined over seven decades. A comprehensive renovation preserved the historic character while modernizing facilities.
