Grotta Giusti Thermal Spa Resort occupies the grounds of a 19th-century villa that once belonged to the family of poet Giuseppe Giusti, near Monsummano Terme in Tuscany. Its centerpiece is a natural thermal cave discovered in 1849, described as the largest of its kind in Europe, with three progressively warmer chambers nicknamed Paradise, Purgatory and Hell (28-34°C) and an underground thermal lake, Limbo, at a constant 36°C. Composer Giuseppe Verdi is said to have called the grotto 'the eighth wonder of the world.'
The property was originally a countryside residence for the family of Italian poet Giuseppe Giusti before the thermal cave beneath it was discovered in 1849. Notable visitors over the following century included Giuseppe Verdi and Giuseppe Garibaldi.
