The natural hot springs here discharge at around 40°C and were developed into a resort in the 1920s when the town briefly flourished as a health destination for those seeking the springs' mineral waters. The resort fell into decline for decades before restoration revived it as a boutique destination. The surrounding desert and boulder landscape of eastern San Diego County makes the setting memorably dramatic.
