Kyukamura Nyuto-Onsenkyo is one of seven traditional inns that make up Nyuto Onsenkyo, a hot spring village on the slopes of Mt. Nyuto in Semboku, Akita Prefecture, inside Towada-Hachimantai National Park. Opened in 1965 as a national 'Kyukamura' (vacation village) facility, it is the most modern of the seven Nyuto inns. It draws on two distinct springs: the reddish-brown, cooler sodium-bicarbonate Nyuto-no-Yu, and the milky-white, hotter sulfur spring Tazawako Kogen-no-Yu. Across Nyuto Onsenkyo as a whole, source temperatures range from about 30°C to 86°C.

Heritage

Nyuto Onsenkyo's hot springs have been used since at least the Edo period; records note that the Akita domain lord Satake Yoshitaka visited the area in 1638. Kyukamura Nyuto-Onsenkyo itself is a more recent addition, built by the Japanese government in 1965 to promote health tourism, joining six older, privately run inns in the valley.

Culture

Nyuto-no-Yu bicarbonate water is traditionally regarded as good for cuts and burns, while the milky sulfur water of Tazawako Kogen-no-Yu is associated with treating high blood pressure and arteriosclerosis — beliefs reflected in how bathers choose among the village's different baths.
