Cauterets, tucked in a valley of the Hautes-Pyrénées at over 900 metres and ringed by peaks rising above 3,000, built its reputation on sulphurous thermal springs that once fed a cluster of establishments — the Thermes de César, de la Raillère, des Griffons, du Bois and de Pauze among them. The town's monumental 19th-century hotels and bathhouses, remnants of thermalism's golden age, once hosted Victor Hugo and George Sand alongside the era's fashionable curistes. Les Bains du Rocher is the town's contemporary thermoludic leisure centre, offering recreational pools and wellness circuits using the same sulphurous water tradition that made Cauterets one of the great Pyrenean spa towns, now paired with its ski resort and casino as the twin pillars of the local economy.
