Project O is an architectural sauna experiment rooted in Finland's most fundamental cultural institution. Developed by a collective of Finnish designers and architects, Project O explores the elemental relationship between heat, wood, water, and the human body through stripped-back sauna spaces designed for maximum sensory clarity. The project has produced a series of saunas in different formats — lakeside structures, smoke saunas, and urban installations — each built with traditional Finnish materials and craftsmanship but through a rigorously contemporary lens. Finland's sauna culture, inscribed on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2020, is the context from which Project O emerges.

The Finnish sauna tradition spans over two thousand years and was central to everyday life, birth, illness, and death in Finnish communities. The sauna as spiritual and social space — rather than mere bathing facility — is the heritage context in which Project O operates. Finland has approximately three million saunas for a population of five and a half million.
Project O engages with the question of what Finnish sauna means in the contemporary world — how the tradition translates into modern architecture without losing its essential quality of heat, wood, steam, and simplicity. It represents a growing international conversation about sauna as serious design subject.
Finnish sauna design typically uses locally sourced Nordic timber species — alder, aspen, pine — and wood-burning kiuas (heaters). Project O's saunas prioritise traditional materials and local craftsmanship over imported or synthetic elements.
