Refugio Terraza de la Tierra is a small eco-retreat in the community forests of the Sierra Juárez in northern Oaxaca state, in the cloud forest zone of the Sierra Norte known as the Pueblos Mancomunados — a network of eight Zapotec communities that collectively manage 30,000 hectares of mountain forest as a community ecotourism cooperative. The retreat offers traditional temazcal ceremonies conducted by Zapotec temascaleros using locally harvested herbs — copal, marigold, hierba santa, and rue — in a clay and stone temazcal structure built in the traditional form. The ceremony takes place in the context of the surrounding cloud forest: misty, fragrant, and biologically extraordinary.

The Zapotec communities of the Sierra Juárez have maintained temazcal traditions as part of their ceremonial and healing culture for over two thousand years, integrated with the extraordinarily rich pharmacopoeia of the cloud forest ecosystem. The Pueblos Mancomunados model of communal forest management is itself a continuation of pre-Columbian communal land tenure systems.
Terraza de la Tierra operates within the Pueblos Mancomunados ecotourism framework, meaning visitor fees support community infrastructure, forest management, and cultural preservation. The temazcal ceremonies are conducted in Zapotec and Spanish by community members, not imported practitioners.
The Pueblos Mancomunados forest management model has been recognised internationally as a successful example of indigenous community conservation. The cloud forest ecosystem the retreat operates within is one of the most biodiverse in Mexico and is protected through communal land ownership.
