Sorgeto Bay, near Panza on the island of Ischia, is a natural inlet where volcanic hot springs emerge directly from the seabed, reaching scalding temperatures at the vents before mixing with cooler Mediterranean seawater to create bathing pools among the rocks. Archaeological finds in the area suggest the hot water has been used for cooking, as well as bathing, since antiquity. It remains a free, publicly accessible thermal site, reached by a stairway from Panza village or by boat.
Archaeological finds in the area point to a long-standing local custom of cooking eggs and seafood in the hot thermal basins, a practice believed to repeat a tradition going back centuries.
