The Hardangerfjord region of western Norway is one of the great fjord landscapes of Europe — 179 kilometres of fjord arms cutting inland through mountains that rise from sea level to over 1,800 metres, with the Hardangervidda plateau above. The Soria Moria Sauna takes its name from the legendary castle that appears at the world's end in Norwegian folk tales, reflecting the otherworldly quality of the fjord landscape in which it sits. Wood-fired in the Norwegian badstue tradition, the sauna opens directly to the fjord water for cold plunging, with views across to the famous Vøringsfossen waterfall — one of Norway's tallest — on the opposite fjord wall. The combination of steam, cold fjord water, and the waterfall's roar creates a sensory experience unique to Hardanger.
