Termas Geométricas is one of the most architecturally considered hot spring developments in South America. Located in a steep volcanic canyon near Coñaripe in Chile's Los Ríos Region, the complex channels naturally occurring thermal water — which emerges from the Andes at temperatures exceeding 70°C — into 60 individual soaking pools arranged along 400 metres of canyon floor and walls. The distinctive red-painted wooden walkways and changing cabins that interconnect the pools were designed by architect Germán del Sol to exist in dialogue with the basalt canyon walls and the native coihue and lingue forest above, rather than imposing a visual language foreign to the landscape. The water is volcanic in origin, heated by the geothermal system associated with the Villarrica-Quetrupillán volcanic complex, and carries dissolved silica, sulphate, and bicarbonate. The canyon traps heat and amplifies the sound of the river below, creating an immersive sensory environment. Snow-capped Villarrica volcano is often visible above the canyon rim.

The Los Ríos Region lies within the ancestral territory of the Mapuche Williche people, who inhabited the lake district of southern Chile for centuries before Spanish colonization. The Villarrica-Lican Ray area and the Panguipulli lake system are deeply embedded in Mapuche cosmology and oral history. Coñaripe itself sits on Mapuche land, and the thermal waters in this region carry significance within Mapuche healing traditions.
Germán del Sol, the architect behind Termas Geométricas, is one of Chile's most celebrated landscape architects, known for projects that seek material and spiritual dialogue with the Patagonian and Andean environments rather than conventional resort development. The project has been cited internationally as an example of how thermal spa development can respect ecological and cultural context rather than overriding it. The pools have no artificial lighting — visitors are expected to leave by dark.
The thermal water flows entirely by natural geothermal pressure from the Villarrica volcanic system, requiring no artificial heating. The development footprint is limited to the canyon floor, leaving the surrounding native forest intact. Vehicle access ends well before the canyon entry, preserving the sonic and visual character of the approach.
