Yunokawa Onsen lies within Hakodate city on Hokkaido's southern coast, near Hakodate Airport. According to local tradition, the springs first gained fame in 1653 after Seiryoin, mother of the 9th lord of the Matsumae clan, was said to have been healed by bathing here. A stronger source was tapped in 1886, discharging over 100°C water at 140 liters per minute, which spurred the resort's modern development. The waters are a sodium-calcium-chloride type, smooth and nearly odorless, reaching roughly 65°C at the source. It is considered one of Hokkaido's three major hot spring resorts, alongside Jozankei and Noboribetsu. Nearby, Hakodate's botanical garden is known for Japanese snow monkeys that bathe in hot spring pools during winter.

Patrimonio
Heritage
Yunokawa's recorded history begins in 1653, when Seiryoin, mother of the ninth lord of the Matsumae domain, is said to have been cured of an ailment after bathing in the springs — an event credited with putting the area on the map. A larger, hotter source discovered in 1886 enabled the town's growth into a full-scale hot spring resort.
