Kawaguchiko Onsen (Fuji-Kawaguchiko Onsen) developed around Lake Kawaguchi, one of the Fuji Five Lakes, in Yamanashi Prefecture, with views of Mount Fuji from many of its baths. Unlike many of Japan's ancient hot spring towns, the spring water here was only struck in 1992 through drilling, and the resort grew quickly afterward to more than 50 inns across the Kawaguchi, Funatsu, and Asakawa districts. The area draws on five distinct named sources with differing temperatures and mineral profiles; one, for example, is classified as a low-tension, alkaline, high-temperature calcium-sodium sulfate-chloride spring, valued for easing neuralgia and joint pain.

Heritage

Unlike most of Japan's historic hot spring towns, Kawaguchiko Onsen has no ancient pedigree: its spring water was only discovered by drilling in 1992, after which the resort expanded rapidly around Lake Kawaguchi.
