Akiu Onsen se encuentra en el valle boscoso del rio Natori, a unos 30 kilometros al suroeste de Sendai, en la Prefectura de Miyagi. Conocido en la antiguedad como Natori no Miyu, fue designado uno de los tres banos imperiales de Japon durante el periodo Kofun (531-570 d.C.). Akiu Onsen lies in the forested upper valley of the Natori River, approximately 30 kilometres southwest of central Sendai in Miyagi Prefecture, Tohoku. Known in antiquity as Natori no Miyu (the Honoured Bath of Natori), the spring was designated one of Japan's three imperial hot springs during the Kofun period (c. 531–570 CE), when Emperor Kensai reportedly used it to treat a skin condition. This designation placed Akiu alongside Arima and Shirahama as the oldest imperially recognized therapeutic waters in Japan. The spring appears in multiple classical poetry collections — the Kokinshu, Shin-Kokinshu, Shuishu, and Yamato Monogatari — making it one of the most literary onsen in Japanese history. During the Sengoku period, the warlord Date Masamune, founder of Sendai domain, was a devoted patron of Akiu. The water is a sodium chloride-bromide type: saline, warming, and noted for its high bromide content, which contributes to the deeply relaxing effect characteristic of the baths. The resort today accommodates visitors in a cluster of ryokans and large resort hotels, including the historic Sakan inn which has operated on the same site for over a thousand years. The surrounding Akiu Great Falls (Akiu Otaki) and the Rairaikyo gorge are designated scenic areas within the greater Sendai tourism zone.
Akiu Onsenは日本・Miyagi Prefecture, Tohokuに位置する食塩泉・温泉。源泉温度は45℃の豊かな温泉水が湧き出る。泉水は中性に近い（pH約7.3）の泉質、塩化物泉・ナトリウム泉を豊富に含む、総溶解固形物1420 mg/Lが特徴だ。531年頃から利用されてきた。皮膚科治療・リウマチ療法・循環器系など多様な温浴療法が行われる。施設では旅館滞在・大型リゾートでの入浴・日中の入浴などが体験できる。

Akiu Onsen posee la rara distinción de ser uno de los tres manantiales termales designados imperialmente en Japón desde el periodo Kofun, junto con Arima Onsen (Hyogo) y Shirahama Onsen (Wakayama). Akiu Onsen holds the rare distinction of being one of Japan's three imperially designated hot springs from the Kofun period, alongside Arima Onsen (Hyogo) and Shirahama Onsen (Wakayama). Its presence in four classical poetry anthologies — Kokinshu, Shin-Kokinshu, Shuishu, and Yamato Monogatari — makes it one of the most extensively documented onsen in Japanese literary history. The Sakan ryokan, the oldest operating inn at Akiu, traces its lineage over one thousand years. The nearby Akiu Great Falls are designated a Natural Monument of Miyagi Prefecture.

秋保温泉は、有馬温泉(兵庫県)、白浜温泉(和歌山県)と並んで、古墳時代から皇室ゆかりの温泉とされる三湯のひとつであるという稀有な栄誉を有している。『古今和歌集』『新古今和歌集』『拾遺和歌集』『大和物語』という四つの古典和歌集・物語集にその名が登場することから、日本文学史上最も広く記録された温泉のひとつとなっている。秋保で現存する最古の宿である佐勘(さかん)は、その系譜を千年以上さかのぼることができる。近隣の秋保大滝は宮城県の天然記念物に指定されている。

Date Masamune (1567-1636), el señor de la guerra conocido como el 'Dragón Tuerto' y fundador de Sendai, utilizó Akiu Onsen como su refugio personal de recuperación. Su mecenazgo definió el estatus cultural de Akiu durante el periodo Edo y estableció la tradición de ryokan que perdura hasta hoy. La aparición del manantial en el Kokinshu —la primera antología poética imperial de Japón (año 905)— lo situó dentro del nivel más alto del paisaje cultural del Japón clásico, donde los onsen se entendían como dones sagrados de la tierra y no como meras instalaciones terapéuticas.

La Asociación de Ryokanes de Akiu Onsen gestiona la asignación del manantial entre los establecimientos asociados y coordina con la ciudad de Sendai el acceso de visitantes al valle circundante del río Natori. La cascada Akiu Otaki y el desfiladero Rairaikyo se gestionan como paisajes naturales protegidos con acceso controlado. La asociación promueve la conexión Sendai-Akiu mediante transporte público para reducir el tráfico de automóviles en el valle.
Sustainability
The Akiu Onsen Ryokan Association manages spring allocation across member establishments and coordinates with Sendai City on visitor access to the surrounding Natori River valley. The Akiu Otaki waterfall and Rairaikyo gorge are managed as protected natural landscapes with controlled access. The association promotes the Sendai–Akiu connection via public transport to reduce car traffic in the valley.

秋保温泉旅館組合は加盟施設間で温泉の配分を管理し、周辺の名取川渓谷への来訪者アクセスについて仙台市と調整を行っている。秋保大滝と磊々峡は、アクセスが管理された保護自然景観として管理されている。同組合は、渓谷内の自動車交通を減らすため、公共交通機関による仙台と秋保のアクセスを推進している。
