Atami Onsen's history is documented as far back as 713 CE, and it later became closely associated with Tokugawa Ieyasu, founder of the Edo shogunate, who had barrels of Atami's water transported to Edo for his personal use — a practice that drew other feudal lords to visit. Around a century ago, aristocrats, politicians, and novelists built villas in the town to take advantage of its therapeutic bathing. Atami now counts more than 500 individual hot spring sources, drawing sodium-calcium chloride and calcium-sodium sulfate spring water at a combined flow of around 16,600-20,000 liters per minute, with seven historic sources known collectively as the Atami Shichiyu.
