Dogo Onsen is the oldest hot spring resort in Japan — possibly the world — with continuous documented use spanning 3,000 years. The main bathhouse, Dogo Onsen Honkan, is a three-storey wooden Meiji-era building designated as a national important cultural property, where visitors bathe in communal pools fed by an ancient alkaline spring. Legend holds that a white heron with an injured leg was healed by bathing in the spring, and the grateful villagers developed the bath for human use. The spring has been visited by emperors, samurai lords, and literary giants — novelist Natsume Soseki lived in Matsuyama and immortalised Dogo in his novel Botchan. The bathhouse is said to have inspired Hayao Miyazaki's Sen to Chihiro (Spirited Away), the world's highest-grossing animated film.

Patrimonio
Heritage
Dogo Onsen Honkan (the main bathhouse) is Japan's oldest standing public bathing facility and is designated as an Important Cultural Property. The building, constructed in 1894, features a distinctive architecture combining Edo-period castle aesthetics with Meiji modernisation — it was one of the first public buildings in Shikoku to have electricity. Emperor Meiji bathed here in 1899, and the Imperial bath chamber — Yushinden — is preserved as a museum within the building.
Cultura
Culture
Dogo Onsen is the heartbeat of Matsuyama's cultural identity and holds a place in Japanese literature and animation that makes it one of the most culturally resonant springs in the world. Natsume Soseki's Botchan (1906) and Masaoka Shiki's haiku poetry drew from the atmosphere of Dogo's communal bathing culture. The alleged inspiration for Spirited Away — where the bathhouse of the spirit world mirrors Dogo's wooden architecture — has made Dogo an international pilgrimage site for anime enthusiasts.
Sostenibilidad
Sustainability
Dogo Onsen's spring output has been continuously monitored since the Meiji period, providing one of the world's longest thermal spring data records. The spring system is protected by municipal ordinances that prohibit all extraction within 500 metres of the spring source. The 2019 renovation of the Honkan bathhouse was conducted under strict cultural heritage guidelines using traditional woodworking techniques, ensuring the building's thermal insulation and water circulation systems meet modern standards without altering historic materials.
