Tenakee Hot Springs

Tenakee Springs is a small community of around 100 year-round residents on Chichagof Island in Southeast Alaska, accessible by ferry or floatplane from Juneau or Sitka. The town built its identity around a single natural hot spring producing water at around 47°C, which supplies the community bathhouse — segregated by gender and open at alternating hours — that has been the social center of Tenakee life since the 1890s. The bathhouse is free to use. The community's single unpaved road, lack of cars, and geothermally warmed social life give Tenakee Springs a character found nowhere else in Alaska.
