The Bains Romains de Dorres are among the most accessible and authentic natural thermal bathing sites in France: a small stone-walled outdoor pool fed by a natural sulphurous spring at 38°C, positioned at 1,735 metres altitude in the village of Dorres in the Cerdagne plateau of the French Pyrenees. Entry is free or nominally priced. The spring has been in use since the Roman occupation of the Pyrenees — the name 'Bains Romains' (Roman Baths) reflects this history, though the current stone infrastructure is of more recent construction. The pool sits in the high plateau landscape of the Cerdagne — one of the sunniest regions of France, with over 300 days of sunshine per year — at the foot of the Font Romeu-Odeillo-Via ski area. Heritage
The Cerdagne plateau straddles the French-Spanish border and was historically governed as a single Catalan territory before the Treaty of the Pyrenees (1659) divided it between France and Spain. Dorres itself is a Catalan-speaking village within French territory — the Catalan language remains the primary cultural identity of the Cerdagne population on both sides of the border.
