Dai-ichi Takimotokan was founded in 1858 by Kinzo Takimoto, who built a small bathhouse in the mountains after hearing of a natural hot spring said to treat skin ailments, hoping it would help his wife's condition. It is the oldest ryokan in Noboribetsu Onsen and sits beside Jigokudani (Hell Valley), the volcanic source of the area's hot spring water. Its baths draw on five spring qualities found in the area — sulfur, sodium bicarbonate, salt (chloride), sodium sulfate, and acidic iron springs — spread across roughly 35 tubs and 5,000 square meters of bathing facilities.
