Hrunalaug sits on private farmland near the village of Flúðir in South Iceland, close to the Golden Circle. According to the operator, the oldest of its pools was built around 1890 by farmer Stefán Jónsson of Ás farm for washing and family bathing; a second pool was added in 1935 for sheep-washing, and a third pool built in 2017 for visitors was renovated with basalt stone in 2023. The pools run at roughly 32–40°C across the site and hold about 15 bathers at once. It remains family-owned and now charges an entrance fee.

Heritage

Hrunalaug's oldest pool dates to around 1890, built by farmer Stefán Jónsson of Ás farm, making it one of the older documented bathing pools of its kind still in use in Iceland. A second pool followed in 1935 for washing sheep, before a pool built for visitors in 2017 was renovated in 2023 — together the three pools reflect a shift from everyday farm use to tourism over more than a century.
