Minakami Onsen is the central hot spring area of the wider Minakami hot spring district in Gunma Prefecture, at the southern foothills of Mount Tanigawa. Records describe it drawing samurai and merchants since the Edo period (1603-1868). The district today comprises 18 separate springs across the Minakami, Sarugakyo-Mikuni, and Tsukinoyo-Kamimoku areas, with water classified as a sodium-calcium sulfate-chloride type, each source varying somewhat in composition. Minakami has been designated a National Health Resort Hot Spring by Japan's Ministry of the Environment since 1979.
