Nozawa Onsen is one of Japan's most atmospheric and authentic onsen villages — a compact settlement of traditional wooden buildings in the mountains of northern Nagano, where the streets run between steaming bathhouses, sake breweries, and vegetable shops. The village has 13 soto-yu (public bathhouses), all free to enter, that are maintained and managed by the village community under a system called the Dosanko-kai. Each bathhouse is fed by its own spring, producing water at temperatures that can reach 85°C at the source — too hot to enter directly, requiring constant dilution with cold spring water. The thermal tradition here dates to at least 1372, and the village retains its traditional character with remarkable integrity.

Patrimonio
Heritage
Nozawa's written thermal history begins in 1372 and the village has maintained continuous operation of its public bathhouses ever since, one of the longest unbroken hot spring bathing traditions in Japan. The Dosanko-kai system of community management — whereby all bathhouses are maintained as communal property — is itself a form of living cultural heritage.
Cultura
Culture
Nozawa Onsen is also one of Japan's traditional ski resort villages, meaning the community seamlessly blends centuries-old thermal culture with winter mountain sports. In January, the village holds the Nozawa Fire Festival (Dosojin Matsuri), an ancient ritual involving the communal bathhouses as a central symbolic site.
Sostenibilidad
Sustainability
The Dosanko-kai system ensures that bathhouse management remains in the hands of the village community, with maintenance costs shared collectively. This model has prevented the commercialisation of the hot springs and maintained the village's authentic character across centuries.
