Salto de Malacatiupan is a geothermal waterfall and pool complex in the Ahuachapán Department of western El Salvador, an area sitting directly atop one of Central America's most active geothermal zones, which also powers El Salvador's geothermal electricity generation. Hot volcanic water at around 45°C cascades over layered volcanic rock formations into thermal pools below, creating a dramatically beautiful natural environment. The Ahuachapán area's geothermal character — with steaming vents, sulfurous odors, and hot rivers — gives the landscape an otherworldly quality.
