Takachiho Onsen is a hot spring bathing facility in Takachiho, Nishiusuki District, Miyazaki Prefecture, near Takachiho Gorge, a site steeped in Japanese creation mythology as the legendary place where the god Ninigi descended to earth. Unlike many of Japan's centuries-old onsen towns, Takachiho Onsen itself is a comparatively new facility, opened in 1998. Its water is classified as a hypotonic, weakly alkaline simple hot spring, with waters traditionally regarded as good for neuralgia, muscle and joint pain, stiff shoulders, poor circulation, and general fatigue recovery. The facility includes a large public bath alongside a dry sauna, mist sauna, heated pool, and outdoor jacuzzi.

Heritage

Takachiho Onsen opened in 1998, making it a relatively recent addition to Miyazaki's hot spring facilities, though it sits in a region tied to some of Japan's oldest mythology as the legendary site of Ninigi's descent from the heavens near Takachiho Gorge.
