Te Aroha Mineral Spas draws on the naturally carbonated hot soda water that flows from the base of Mount Te Aroha, source of the Mokena Geyser, described by the Te Aroha Museum as the world's only hot soda water geyser, erupting roughly every 40 minutes. The spa developed from 1883, at the peak of a health-tourism boom that flourished after gold was discovered locally from 1880, making Te Aroha one of New Zealand's leading 19th-century health spas. A bore sunk in the 1930s improved access to the soda water, and the same source has supplied a bottled 'Lemon & Te Aroha' drink on and off since 1888. Māori valued the springs for their medicinal properties long before European settlement.
