Terme di Lurisia draws on two low-mineral (oligomineral) springs, Garbarino and Santa Barbara, both emerging at around 9°C with a pH near 6.98, in the Maritime Alps of Cuneo province. The water's radioactive (radon) properties were scientifically confirmed by Marie Curie in 1918, and the first spa institute was founded in 1940 by a doctor and two entrepreneurs. Garbarino water is used externally for anti-inflammatory treatments, while Santa Barbara water is taken internally as a diuretic for kidney conditions.
| Fixed residue (Garbarino spring) | 116 mg/L |
| Fixed residue (Santa Barbara spring) | 36 mg/L |
The healing properties of the water were reportedly first noticed by miners who treated wounds in the spring in the early 20th century. Marie Curie visited in August 1918 and scientifically confirmed the exceptional therapeutic properties of the radioactive thermal water, paving the way for the founding of the first spa institute in 1940.
