Totsukawa Onsen is one of three free-flowing hot spring sources (with Tosenji and the older Kamiyu Onsen) in Totsukawa village, the largest village in Japan by area in southern Nara Prefecture. Source water reaches roughly 78°C and is a sodium bicarbonate and chloride spring. The area is designated a National People's Recreation Spa by the Ministry of the Environment, and about 96% of the village's land remains natural forest. The current Totsukawa Onsen resort area developed in 1974 alongside the construction of the Futatsuno Dam Lake.
