Yumoto Onsen sits at roughly 1,500 meters altitude in the Okunikko area of Nikko, Tochigi Prefecture, and is said to have been discovered in 788 by Shodo Shonin, the Buddhist monk credited with founding Nikko. Its sulfur spring water emerges with a greenish tint and turns milky white on contact with air. In 1954 it was designated Japan's first National Recreational Hot Spring Resort.
Tradition credits the monk Shodo Shonin with discovering the spring in 788. Hot spring use developed further during the Muromachi period, and after Nikko Toshogu Shrine was established in the Edo period, the Tokugawa shogunate appointed official 'yumamori' guardians of the springs.
