Alpentherme Gastein is a 36,000 m² thermal spa in Bad Hofgastein, in Austria's Gastein Valley, built around six themed bathing areas including an aquarium dome with panoramic Alpine views. The thermal water is drawn from the historic Gastein springs — the same radon-bearing waters that emerge at the foot of the Graukogel mountain at Bad Gastein, several kilometers away, at temperatures the springs collectively range from 40°C to 46.4°C. These waters have been sought after since medieval times for rheumatism, joint conditions and circulatory disorders, originally carried to guesthouses via open wooden channels.
The Gastein Valley's thermal waters have been valued since the medieval period, when nobility made difficult journeys to bathe despite primitive facilities; water was originally conducted to guesthouses via open wooden channels, later wooden pipe systems.
