Rogner Bad Blumau is built around the Vulkania thermal spring, which reaches the surface at approximately 110°C from a depth of around 2,800-3,000 meters, carrying the highest mineralization of any spring in Styria's 'Thermenland' region — a natural salt content of about 17.6 g/L that lets bathers float much as they would in the sea. A second, gentler spring, Melchior, rises from 970 meters at 36°C. The resort itself, designed by Austrian artist and architect Friedensreich Hundertwasser with undulating rooflines, grass-covered roofs and irregular windows, opened in 1997 and has become one of Austria's most photographed thermal spa buildings.

The Vulkania spring was discovered in 1977 during oil exploration drilling. Two decades later the site was transformed into a resort designed by celebrated Austrian architect Friedensreich Hundertwasser, opened in 1997, making the buildings themselves a work of art alongside the thermal water.
