Therme Wien sits in the Oberlaa district of Vienna's Favoriten borough, on a hot sulfur spring discovered by accident in 1934 during petroleum drilling — the well was sealed the same year for lack of commercial oil interest. The City of Vienna revived exploration in 1965, and a modest spring station with provisional spa operations opened in 1969. The current complex, opened in 2010 and marketed as Europe's largest and most modern city spa, draws water at a constant 54°C, calcium-sodium-sulfate-chloride-sulfur in composition, with a sulfur content over 60 mg/L flowing at about 30 liters per second. It is directly accessible via Vienna's U1 subway line.

Heritage

The spring was discovered entirely by accident in 1934 during oil exploration drilling in Oberlaa; finding no commercial petroleum, the well was sealed, and it took the City of Vienna until 1965-1969 to develop it into a public spa, eventually growing into today's 2010-built flagship facility.
