Kanbayashi Onsen

Kanbayashi Onsen is a small hot spring village in Yamanouchi, Nagano Prefecture, about 35 km northeast of central Nagano City, that serves as the gateway to the Jigokudani Monkey Park. The park's wild Japanese macaques began bathing in a hot spring pool built for a nearby guesthouse and gave the park its fame; the water used throughout the village and the monkeys' own bathing pool is piped from the same source inside the park. The source water is classified as a sodium-calcium chloride and sulfate spring with a pH of about 7.0. Visitors reach the monkey park via a 1.6 km forested walking trail from the village.
