Krauma opened in late 2017 next to Deildartunguhver in Reykholt, West Iceland — Europe's most powerful hot spring by flow rate, discharging about 180 liters per second at 97–100°C. Krauma tempers this water with cold glacial water to fill six pools ranging roughly 37–41°C, plus a cold plunge. Because the source water is continuously replaced at high flow rate, the facility states no additional chemical treatment is needed to keep the pools clean.
Deildartunguhver has long supplied hot water for regional district heating, with pipelines running 34 km to Borgarnes and 64 km to Akranes; Krauma was built in 2017 to let visitors experience this geothermal resource directly at its source.
